The reason for this is Austin Air believes in using as little plastic as possible benefiting those who are sensitive to chemicals and off gassing that can occur from plastic and Styrofoam.  The bodies are painted with a baked on powder coating to ensure that all chemicals and gasses are eliminated throughout the baking process.  That way when you open the box you won't have to wait for your new air purifier to off-gas in your home.
